Green Tea! A simple intro

Introduced in the world by China, now many countries are in this miraculous gift of nature. Why? You might think. The real answer is in the past, dating way back to 1,000s of years.

From getting rid of that sting like headache to treating cancerous cells, Green Tea was (and is being) used as medicine for various kinds of illness due to presence of concentrated amount of Flavonoids.

The first use of green tea’s story goes somewhat like this:

Once, a king of a nation was resting under the tree.  The breeze so nice and the sun so warm, the king felt drowsy. Few moments later, one of his servants’ came there with the jar of water and a glass. Seeing the king in deep sleep, he just left the jar there and went back.

The sun rose high in the sky, shining stronger than ever. Bright rays passed through the thick branches and hit on the forehead of the king. A certain distress! The king woke up in a flash, maybe the warrior inside him became conscious of sudden change.

The king jumped up, but was brought to knees instantly, perhaps due to dizziness. Slowly, he reached for the jar that was lying just beside his mat, poured a cup and drank. Miraculously, the dizziness and the stiffness in his back since last day sword fighting was gone, and way too quickly. He felt fully refreshed, like he just had got a deep relaxing massage and a warm bath. Awed! he looks in the jar. There he found the color of water turned little red-greenish color and a leaf floating on the surface.

And that’s how the green tea was introduced to mankind.

Black green and herbal tea, the differences

Black and green tea come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub that grows in mountainous areas in China, Nepal, India, and other countries. The differences between them stem from what happens after the leaves are harvested and allowed to wilt.

To make green tea, the leaves are quickly steamed or heated to stop oxidation, the chemical process that causes browning. To make black tea, the leaves are crushed, torn, curled, or rolled and allowed to oxidize before being dried. This additional processing step degrades some of the flavonoids. As a result, black tea has slightly lower amounts of flavonoids than green tea.

Herbal teas are made from a range of different herbs, spices, and other plants, such as mint, cinnamon, licorice, ginger, and rose hips. While these brews may contain beneficial chemicals similar to those found in regular tea, there isn't enough research to support any guesses about the potential health benefits of herbal tea.

Green Tea Nutritional break down

Unsweetened brewed green tea is a zero calorie beverage. The caffeine contained in a cup of tea can vary according to the length of infusing time and the amount of tea infused. In general, green tea contains a relatively small amount of caffeine (approximately 20-45 milligrams per 8-ounce cup), compared with black tea, which contains about 50 milligrams and coffee with 95 milligrams per cup.

Green tea is considered one of the world’s healthiest drinks and contains one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of any tea. Natural chemicals called polyphenols in tea are what are thought to provide its anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects. Green tea is approximately 20-45 percent polyphenols by weight, of which 60-80 percent are catechins such as EGCG. Catechins are antioxidants that are said to help prevent cell damage.
