Chapter 4: Last Words

Info | Trending Q/A | Lifestyle
This article is part of an article series: "About your body weight"
Part 4 of 5

The Conclusion

Last Words

It's sad to say that many have parted with us. Some gave up in the Beginning and some when the Fun had just started. Not many could make it!

The number, it's roughly around 2% of you who are from the Origin. So, Congratulations!(maybe)

You have now gained an arsenal of well-resourced tools. Now, how you are going to use?, it's upto you.

Use your tools, be familiar with the tactics. FAIL and fail more. And get up again, get up one more time than you fail. Just put your thoughts, your body and your soul into it... Do this and it will be not much far to triumph that victory.

And I guarantee that you will get what you deserved, for what you have worked, for the kind of seed that you have planted.

Find the right balance. Not just in food or exercise, but in each and every deed.

"

By the way, if you have followed all the way through to this part of the series AND have finished that last sip from your glass of water then you have burnt around 412 calories.

Add 80 more calories, if you had got your water yourself while maintaining a correct posture through out this series.

That's about 30 minutes of football; 40 minutes of sking; 3000+ jumps while skipping and 10,000+ steps of walking.

"

The real JOURNEY has just begun. What's your next move?

With billions of Strong Wishes! (*7.8 and rising)

Chapter 3.2
“The Mindset”
3.2.1 Being Hero
3.2.2 Journey
3.2.3 Gang Up
3.2.4 Take a Breather
3.2.5 Best Person
3.2.6 Food
3.2.7 Keep a Journal
3.2.8 Your mind
Follow this link to the FULL CONTENT menu.

...

We nailed down the physical side of the story, now let’s talk about the mindset.

Here, we will be discussing about the emotional, mental and environmental aspects needed, that which will act as the supporting pillars for you to get back in shape.

Now, take a sip of that water and let’s get started without delay.

The Mindset

3.2.1 Being HERO?! Well You Be Better Equipped Then

Don’t be a “all can do” guy. Go slow, chunk down your goals to simple and easily understandable pieces. You can even add phrases that can make you remember. And write it down.

The main idea here is most of try to do many things in one go. But harsh reality is that it can never be done.

Our brain is wired to do a single task at a time. With practice you may be able to do many tasks simultaneously but that is strongly not recommended as it creates a lot of unnecessary toll in both your mind and body. And you know what happens when there is stress.

While forming a new habit, it’s easier and heavily functional when you break down it to certain realistic goals.

Like, start with committing yourself to cut down 25 % of total carbs that you are consuming for a week. Or you can just cut down in each last meal for 7 days and then carry on to next step. You just have to eat probably 50 gms less rice during that meal. Which is just few spoons.

Or, just start your day with drinking water. Bring a glass of water near to your bed and drink it tomorrow morning.

It’s quite easy isn’t it?

Get creative on how to chunk down, use ideas that suits you.

"

As a house is made by putting one brick with other in certain alignment, you will also achieve the desired and deserved result by putting one step at a time in your journey to an ideal weight.

Remember to do one thing at a time. You will actually have a lot of work done rather being blown by the pressure as like that in pressure cooker.

"

3.2.2 Journey: Enjoy The Process.

We often relate the Food as a reward and Exercise as a punishment. That’s the kind of mindset what makes hurdle for you. Get rid of this.

You are actually practicing self-care and safe-love. Why this should be looked as an unfavorable thing?

Now let me ask you: Do fit people quit eating healthy food and exercise? The answer is no. Everyone knows this. If they stop doing things that actually make them fit then they will eventually fall. And most of 'em were as you and I are now.

So, don’t be ashamed to run just because your stomach is bouncing. You are doing for you own care, why should it matter about what other’s think.

Even if you can’t ignore then go to gym. I am sure there are lot of people like you and lot of fit people who will actually guide and motivate you (if you are humble enough).

If going to gym is also an issue, then start your practice at home. You can move out when you are ready. You can get reference and basic exercise videos all over the internet. Use your resources.

Again if you have issue in starting at home then go to bathroom, lock yourself and do wall pushups or sit ups.

The idea is; don’t look for excuses. Look for the solution and you will find one.

And this is not just only for the exercise but for the food selection as well. Don’t be afraid to put that extra spoon of rice back to pot. Not many will acknowledge your actions but eventually they will when they start to see that you are actually serious about it.

"

Remember that you are not the selected one (actually, if you are reading this than maybe) that have to fight. There are lot of people and some are in more bad state than you have. They didn’t hide behind excuses. They kept moving, finding their way through whatever sized rocks were placed before them.

And it should not be of much bother if you couldn’t achieve the desired results. Some will reach earlier, some on time and some will reach later. Be patience with yourself and keep UP!

"

3.2.3  Gang Up: Call Up For Arms

As already mentioned above, call for the supports; especially those who can give you that mental and emotional and even physical support on your journey.

Be it be your mother, father, brother, sister, friend or neighbor or even your ex. Just ring ‘em up.

Attract yourself with positivity and motivated individuals and no matter how far or hard the road is (actually it won’t be that hard), your path will be glowing with lights.

All you have to do is walk the path laid by your GANG.

3.2.4  Take A Breather: Just Relax And Breath

Before starting anything, be it be when you enter a gym or when you just wake up; relax for a while. Take few deep breaths and recollect your thoughts on focus on the upcoming task. That’s all.

When stress or anxiety arises, do the same. You will be amazed by how strong and effectively this works.

3.2.5  Best Person: Be Your Own Wingman (*My Fav')

Not much to say here but if you aren’t your best person, a person that motivates you, that lifts you up or enjoys the process with you or just be there for you; then you are actually in a bad company.

No matter how many close friend(s) you may have, you are the only person who spends the most time with you. Isn’t it so?

So, make yourself your best friend. At least even when no one is there, you will always be with you.

3.2.6  Food: Don’t get too choosy.

One of the most common problem seen when we actually start to act (*on above provided steps) is that we tend to become more choosy and critical. We start to become hard on ourselves, especially in food choices (you can relate). We start to get emotional when we don’t get what we want.

An egoistic and self-centered nature gets build up inside us and we start to like a long faced serious rock. You might have probably experienced this with your colleagues or families. And this happens naturally.

Too much good is also evil as too much sweet doesn't really tastes sweet, does it?

So, just take a breather, pull yourself out of this and remember that food is just a food (* or any other thing). With a little bit more exercise or a good food tomorrow or later that day will help you get rid of those extras.

But, this doesn’t mean you can do it frequently.

Discipline is must but being serious is not. Get wild on weekends and again get back to your routine. You will catch up with your rhythm.

"

Sometimes you may have urge to grab a late night snack or something. To avoid adding negative values, fill your cabinet with good food like some fruits or nuts.
Remember how much effort you have put into this. Don’t let it all go in one (or few) sweeps.

"

3.2.7  Keep A Journal: Record your every moves

So, you finished that water, didn't you?

Mark that in your diary. Mark everything that you do throughout the day. No need to filter out. Just start for now. Later you will know what to do with those entries.

Record all your moves, as the title suggests. Be it good or bad, don’t judge.

3.2.8  You mind is like what your surroundings looks like

The bed is messy, litter around the bin or clothes on the chair, or maybe that suitcase hasn't seen light (*of hope) in years?

Psychological researches points that it is actually the real condition of your inner environment. All cluttered and messy, piled and blocked.

Or the leak on that wall, with which you have learnt to live, perhaps.

Now, what to do? You know the answer, don't you?
If you don't then scroll up and study agian.

...

This is all there is to know(basics) on mindset.
Slow and steady has been and will always wins. But to win you have to complete the race.
Take your own pace, and remember to have fun during the process.

Grab another glass of water and review all the heading listed in this article. No need to dive in, just give a quick look.

Are you done? Ok then that’s all you need to know. Start with a small step and increase gradually when you are acustomed to it. That's the key.

...

The Physical Aspects

3.1.1 Water: Give a kick start to your metabolism

Water is life, consuming water to its optimum will give you miraculous results and boosting metabolism is just one of them.

Drink water, (warm or cold, it doesn’t much matter. see what you are more comfortable with) 500ml. for approx. 30-45 minutes earlier every meal. By doing this, you will be boosting your metabolism by 25-30% for 60 to 90 minutes. This will help you burn more calories, helps in better digestion and also makes you less prone to eating more (than needed).

Try not to consume water during meal and after meal for about 45 minutes. Even if you have to, just take a sip. Just don’t gobble up the whole glass, that is actually considered not good practice.

Add a habit of drinking water first thing in the morning when you get up. It’s great for bowel movements as well. Continue drinking throughout the day. You can add lemon with black salt for change in taste. Lemon (all citric plants) helps in cutting fats as well.

Practice sitting down comfortably while drinking or eating as standing and consuming is related to some serious health hazards.

Take a regular bath/shower (and I know most of us don’t), as body needs to regulate the temperature and thus consumes more calories.

"

How much water do you need? Here is an easy formula: your weight/20. Ex: 80kg/20 = 4ltrs. This much liter(s) of water is needed for you. Note that it may vary acc. to age, activity and environment but gives you a rough idea.

"

Did you finish your water?

3.1.2 Food: Know what youe eat and you shall flourish

Starving to lose weight is actually a false ideology. This will put yourself in more haphazard. Loss of energy, mental imbalances, laziness are just the surface and it takes a huge toll on your body.
And eating more than needed is also as bad as starving.

Know that the food you eat is converted into energy (calories). And these, if unchecked for certain time, leads to the issues like diziness, loss of body balance, gastritis, ulcer, diabetes, blood pressure, you name it

.

Probably around 65-75% of diseases can be cured if you just manage this "food" part. Exercises comes later.

An ideal calorie scale is less than 2,000 calories for female and around 2,400 for male. See the table below to get for quick reference.

3.1.3  Go low carb diet, and not low fat diet.

What this means is watch out for the calories that is added from carbohydrates in your food cos’ that’s the real villain.

Refined and polished carbohydrates sources like that in sugar and grains (bread, pasta, noodles, rice, etc.) have been stripped of fibrous and nutritious value. So, focus on natural fiber food and commit to low-carb diet. This is around 2-3 times more effective then low fat diet.

"

Avoid anything that is polished or refined, it’s a waste and does more harm than good.
Use smaller plates (more on this on Chapter 3.2: the Mindset ).

"

3.1.4  Eat more fiber rich food.

Add more fiber to your plate, especially viscous(sticky) fiber.

Fiber rich (soluble) foods actually has a unique way of entering your system. Soluble fiber passes through the digestive system and goes to your friendly bacteria which eat it and turn them into usable energy. This is called fermentable fiber which are very beneficial for maintain health and body weight.

"

Remember that viscous fiber is only found in plant based food.
Most whole foods, vegetables and fruits are rich in fiber. Search up and see what you can add to your diet.

"

3.1.5  Make place for raw foods in your plate.

Around 20-30 % of your total food that you consume on daily basis should be raw. This may include fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Eating vegetables and fruits (in both cooked and uncooked) is very health friendly and as they have high fiber count, they will make you fuller and greatly help you on your weight loss journey.

Nuts, on the other hand provides useful nutrients and vitamins as well.

"

Remember, anything that makes you energized while consuming less carb is a good choice.
But be aware of fake, refined and processed and advertisements. Watch out for the ingredients and total contents.

"

3.1.6  Consider high protein based diet.

Be it be from meat or lentils, proteins are actually what we need for the building blocks of cells and also to grow your muscle mass.

It is the single most important nutrient to lose weight and one of the easiest and a tasty way as well.

Especially if you are involved in more than moderate physical activity, eat more protein based diet (you may already know this, don't you?) as when body starts to consume calories, it may switche to your muscle mass if energy is insufficient while preserving the fat deposits for future usage.

This is also the reason why starvation is not so good idea. As along with fat, muscle mass is also reduced. As a result, body functions weakly and one day the case will come when it will be hard to turn back as well. Add more protein to your diet, as most protein sourced food have fibrous content and have lower calories but makes you full throughout the day.

For starter, try adding 25% of your daily diet with lean protein.

Good sources of protein are found in our regular foods like salmon, chicken breast, lentils, pulses, eggs, beans and legumes, and many more. More on these on later posts.

Use supplements of whey protein or protein powder if you struggle to get protein to your diet.

"

Eating a high protein based diet has shown to boost metabolism by 80-100 calories while shaving off around 400-500 calories per day off your diet.
This is actually a huge boost to cut off that extra calories.

"

3.1.7  Avoid sugar based drinks: No soda or fruit juice.

Bluntly saying, sugar is bad! period*. It can be even worse than any drug addiction. And when it is in liquid form, it’s acts as poison. This, sugar, is one of the biggest reason why you may be gaining weight despite of all the hard works. And sadly, it has entered into daily lives of all, even children.

Sugary drinks are directly related to obesity. Various researches states that about 60-75% of weight gain issues are in direct connection with consumption of sugar.

This applies to those shelfed fruit juice as well, they contain almost similar amount of sugar as that in any soda like coke and Pepsi.

"

So, you are buying fruit juice or a soda, by considering its health benefits, you are actually buying poison in disguise. A lesser one but a sure one.
Better eat a whole fruit or even two.
Self-blended juices are not bad but it’s always better to eat food as a whole, isn't it?

"

3.1.8  Focus on whole food: That what which is actuallywhole !

Food that are not refined or processed is a whole food. These types of food are generally close to their natural state and don’t have any added sugars, flavors, starches and chemicals.

In whole foods, all the nutrients are preserved and are in their natural compounds. Some of them may be slightly processed and refined to make for availability and edibility.

Some of the common whole foods to consider in your menu are: eggs, leafy greens, boiled potatoes, whole grains (barley, millet, brown rice, quinoa), milk (especially raw and unpasteurized), meat (those without much added antibiotics and hormones), salad greens, frozen (these are minimally processed).

Do you know any other?

"

Avoid foods that are heavily processed, have refined carbohydrates, with added sugars.

"

3.1.9  Fats: That which are actually good for you.

Firstly, completely clear your mind from this fake rumor that fats are bad. Some are but not all.

Without fats present in the body, you will always be feeling little numb and less energized as fats helps in absorbing some nutrients and fat-soluble vitamins that are used to produce important hormones, your cell growth will slow down drastically. Summing up, fats are crucial for proper and optimum functioning of body.

Fats are one of the major source of energy which are stored in body’s fat tissue, which releases fatty acids when energy is required. In fact, about 9 kcal is formed if you consume 1 gm, whereas proteins and carbohydrates provides only about 4 kcal per gram. This shows that fat is the most concentrated source to provide energy.

Although, fats are good, consuming high amount of it leads to various health risks like cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. In moderate it works wonders but in excess it blocks the passages of blood and nutrients flow, making your body prone to diseases. And if there is lesser amount of fats in body, you know what happens.

This all is heavily dependent on what type of fat you consume. The saturated and trans fats have negative impact in the body and raises bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in your blood. Whereas, mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats helps the body to lower bad cholesterol levels when consumed as part of a healthy diet.

Some of the healthy fats to add to your diet are: Olive oil, Coconut oil, full fat yogurt, Avocado, salmon.

Want to learn more on cholesterol? Follow to this link to get a quick note.

"

Remember to check your fat consumption rate. Always add little amount of good fats to your diet.

"

And don't forget to drink some water.

3.1.10  Physical: Activities, Routines And Exercises.

Getting to shape, toning your body or having an energetic and healthy lifestyle... If you are looking for these things, then physical activities are must.

Ever wondered how your beloved celebrities are so fit even in their 40s and 50s? They just were conscious of what food they keep in their body and keep boosting up their cardio. Many hit the gym or do self-workout as well.

Here are some special BULLET tips for you. Try applying each one of these and see the miracle.

Get a good sleep: Don’t ignore it.

With activity, there comes need to rest. And sleep is the best rest you can provide.

Ever wondered why no matter what you do, that belly fat just doesn’t go? Researches suggests that sleep has good amount of relation to this.

A person with good and sound sleep in right amount, at same time, has better body and mental functions as all the organs gets rest and are re-vitalized and metabolic rates also rises up.

So, get a good sleep on exact same time. The ideal scale is around 6-8 hours for adults and 7-9 hours for children. * This may differ according to the food that you eat, the amount of physical activity and your own body.

If you want to decrease your sleep amount, then try reducing the food that takes higher time to digests. But be wary of your calorie requirement as well.

Have a good bowel movement: Time is precious don’t waste in toilet.

This point is actually related to inner physical activity and is food’s last stop. It is directly proportional to both physical and mental aspects.

Having a healthy diet with good amount of physical activity will help you achieve a good bowel movement. Take a quick look on these easy ideas to get that bowel moving.
  • Drink plenty of water. Did you finish that water?
  • Add fiber food slowly as your body needs time to adopt the changes.
  • Eat more fruits, vegetables and nuts.
  • Cut irritating foods like alcohol, caffeinated drinks, fatty and spicy foods.
  • Keep the body moving.
  • Correct your posture. Do it now.
  • Prepare yourself mentally: It is natural. Don’t hold yourself; go if needed.
  • Try creating a calm and stress free environment: You might not believe but stress does affect your bowel pattern.
  • Maintain a good routine: Be it be morning, afternoon or evening. But morning is best.

Get your heart rate up: Do some aerobics and cardio

Take control of your body and it shall help giving you what you desire.

Physical exercise is must, especially in today’s world. When your heart rate alleviates; it burns more calories. So, the idea is to grab your shoes and start running or jumping or dancing or whatever makes your heart rate go up.

Add some exercises that moves your whole body: Jumping jacks, burpee, cycling, swimming, boxing, dancing, trekking, gymnastics.
One other thing you must consider is to look out for plateauing your progress. This happens when your body gets accustomed to certain exercise routines. Easy way to avoid this is to add variations, maybe weekly.

Best time to do exercise is around 4-6 am and 3-6 pm as this time your body is naturally more active.

Remember to avoid alleviating heart rate before and after meal and before sleep for about 30-45 minutes.

Another way of burning up calories is doing chores. Yeah, I feel you, now, don’t be lazy.

Hit some weights: Lift a dumbbell or that rice sack

As the topic says, start going to gym and involve in some weight lifting and resistance activities.

As one of the worse side effects of dieting (not that useful, is it?) is that it causes muscle loss and slowdowns metabolic rates of the body and leads your body to starvation mode.

To avoid this, lift weights as it will boost your metabolic rates and also helps to gain muscle mass (if added with protein diet).

Resistance exercises like string pulling, rock-climbing are best for getting that toned body.

So, what are you waiting for? Pull that water from that well.

Walk: which is Probably the best idea.

Nothing much here to say but one thing, just start walking.

Our body structure is actually more efficient when we walk. A lot of researches on human physiology points towards this.

WHO suggests that to have a healthy life one should walk at-least 8,000 steps i.e. about 6.5 km.  This burns 264 calories on average. *Note that weight and height makes differences.

Well, this might be hard at first but you can reach this target easily.
Take few breaks and walk around the block, do morning and evening walks, use foot to travel short distances like reaching your neighbor or friend house which is few blocks away and make use of treadmills while listening your favorite song.

By doing these simple activities you can easily reach the goal.
Remember that every steps counts. So, keep moving.

Get some SUN energy

Sun is the main source of energy for whole planet. So, there is no doubt that this helps you.

Exposing yourself to sun, especially in morning before 10 am is highly beneficial for your health. It makes your bones and muscle to function more while releasing stress, increases the serotine level in your body which makes you feel good. It also boosts your metabolism as well.

So, take some of that free and powerful energy. You can get this with your morning walks.

So, how many of these tips you can add to your life?
5? or 10? or maybe all !

...

This is all there is to know(basics) on the "physical" side of story. Do yourself some genuine research on foods and exercises AND work with a schedule and a good environment that suits your body.

Make a habit of drinking water. Grab another glass of water now.

...

The Introduction

2.1 What is weight, actually?

Weight = mass of object * gravitational acceleration or W = mg, in physics, as you may already know.

Your weight is the measure of the intensity of force imposed on you by the local gravitational field.

When you are up on the measuring scale, the gravitational force of earth that which pulls you down (it is due to gravity that you don't fly here and there like superman), shows a certain reading on that weighing machine and a needle points to a number on that scale which is your weight.

Bones, muscles, fats (good or bad?), blood, skin and hair, food and water (that has just reached the stomach or is ready to leave your body); all these elements combine in a frame that you refer as a body. And your weight is sum of these elements.

So, if you are thinking of weight loss or gain, you have to think on all these elements along with your emotional and mental aspects.

Many people misses here. Due to lack of proper guidance and support; lots of accidents, injuries or other life-threating issues have been created. Even so called nutritionists, renowned diet planners also have missed out on these (not all but there are many).

"

If you seriously want to get a healthy body; then you got to be more conscious of your actions.
As mentioned, all these strategies, tips and knowledge listed here have been verified by scientists and experts and backed by researches and tests. So, there is no doubt that this doesn't work for you.

"

2.2  How weight is gained in our body?

When there is increase in mass of muscle, fats deposits and fluids in body; the weight is gained. So, when the increment reading exceeds the optimum level, usually calculated in BMI scale, the body is labeled as over-weight or obese and when the reading is lower, it is labeled as under-weight.

BMI (Body Mass Index): A short intro

BMI is a common formula used to assess the index of body w.r.t. your weight and height. The weight excess or deficiency may, in part, be accounted for by body fat although other factors such as muscularity also affect BMI significantly.

Calculating Formula of BMI:

BMI = Your weight (kg) / (height (m))2 = kg/m2

With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Because height is commonly measured in centimeters, divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters.

Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)
Calculation: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98

Scale Range:

According to WHO (World Health Organization), BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight and above 25 is considered overweight. 30 is obese whereas 25 is the red zone. Safest and healthiest range is 20-22.5.

Note that above BMI calculation is for adult only. For children (2-18), it is calculated as above and then compared with values of other children of same age range. If BMI is of less than 5th percentile, then it is considered underweight and if above 95th percentile then it is obese. 85th -95th is overweight.

There are other means to gain more detailed calculations like Body fat calculator, neck-waist-hip ratio calculator and clamping actions. All these should be done under professional guidance to avoid any risk and get optimum and more accurate results.

Rolling back to the main topic

Gaining of weight directly depends on the food and fluid that we consume. When more energy (in the form of calories from food in our body) is gained than the energy consumed or expended in life activities like in body functioning process and extra physical exercises, then the weight is gained.

In layman’s term:  Less the calories consumption, more the chances of gaining weight.

"

But remember, consuming less calorie doesn’t mean starving yourself. You can still lose weight while being full. Eat food that are less in calories but high in proteins and fibers and be thoughtful of what you consume, whether it is food or thoughts.
We will be focusing more on this issue in Chapter 3: Bullet tips to Ideal weight.

"

2.3  Metabolism and its role on our body.

Now, another main factor that directly effects our body weight is metabolism. Let’s dig in below.

Well, you might have already heard a lot on metabolism, especially if you follow any health topics then also, let’s take a quick review.

Metabolism is a process; it is a set of life sustaining chemical reactions in our body. It is especially crucial for body as it converts the food that we eat into energy which is used to run the system. The energy is used to build blocks of protein, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymes, carbohydrates and for eliminating the metabolic wastes.

These functions allow us to grow and reproduce, maintain the body structure and respond in accordance of the environment like: maintaining temperature when it's cold, keeping body functional throughout the day and many more.

"

The word metabolism can also refer to the sum of all chemical reactions that occur in living organisms, including digestion and the transport of substances into and between different cells, in which case the above described set of reactions within the cells is called intermediary metabolism or intermediate metabolism.

"

How this is related to weight? you may ask. The answer; if the metabolic function alleviates in the body then more energy is consumed to support it. Like when you jump, walk or even read, metabolism process rises; which in result consumes more calories (energy) is burnt thus, helping us in our road to maintain that dreamed, ideal body.

You might know someone who just doesn’t gain weight, even if he consumes three times more than you. And some who instantly gain weight while just eating that one more slice of cake. This is all due to metabolic rates. It is differing from body to body.

...That guy who doesn’t gain weight has high metabolic rate, i.e. his body consumes high amount of energy. Whereas, the other guy (less fortunate one ?!) has low metabolic rate, his body doesn’t consume that much energy.

We have tried to squeeze those years and years of wisdom, research, knowledge and experiences as much as it was possible, all under just 5, easily graspable chapters.

1.2  Theme of writing this series

Naturopathy and Ayurveda : A brief History

Info | Trending Q/A | Knowledge
5 minutes read.
The differences and similarities...

Natuorpathy and Ayurveda; are they siblings?

If you have never heard of Ayurveda, you may wonder how it is different to Naturopathy and what its benefits are. Ayurveda and Naturopathy have many similar principles to each other. By taking a holistic and natural approach to the body and its ailments, Ayurveda and Naturopathy both look to heal the body naturally and in harmony with nature. If you are looking for Naturopathy in Melbourne, Ayurveda and the Ayurclinic can help you.

History of Naturopathy

The word “Naturopathy” comes from the Latin root for birth (“natura”), and the Greek root for suffering (“pathos”). As far back as Ancient Greece in 400BC, Hippocrates, the Ancient Greek “Father of Medicine,” is said to have been the first advocate of naturopathic medicine.

Naturopathy as a form of alternative medicine has its roots in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Naturopaths in Melbourne and everywhere else considered the practice a broad discipline, focusing on the body’s spirit and holistic health. This included the use of herbal medicine, homeopathy and the elimination of negative food and drink from one’s diet.

Naturopathy is not one particular type of therapy, rather it is a philosophy of life, disease and health. Naturopaths hold the belief that, through the body’s vital energies, it can health itself. The aim of Naturopathy is to prevent illness while avoiding the use of drugs, instead focusing on diet and lifestyle changes, stress reduction and herbal remedies.

History of Ayurveda

While both Naturopathy and Ayurveda enjoy long histories, Ayurveda has been around considerably longer. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing system and its historical roots come from the Indian subcontinent. Ayurvedic teachings were first recorded in the Veda, the world’s oldest scripture, dating back to 1700-1100 BC.  It is an ancient system focusing on life (ayur) and knowledge (veda). Like Naturopathy, the philosophy of Ayurveda focuses on a balance between life, health, and disease, which are interconnected with one’s physical, emotional and spiritual being. The basis of Ayurveda is that disease is caused by an imbalance of doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).

How alike are they: in their core?

Naturopathy shares many common methods with Ayurveda. Firstly, both offer a complete system of healing. Both Ayurveda and Naturopathy seek to not just treat the symptoms of an illness, but instead treat the underlying cause of the illness. Therefore, taking a whole-body approach to healing. Patients are encouraged to adjust not only their physical, but also their mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Both systems use homeopathy, massage therapy, yoga and meditation, and nutritional changes to bring the body back to a balanced and healthy state.  As mentioned, Naturopathy encourages the body’s own self-healing process. When given the opportunity (by removing unnatural toxins in the body), the body will choose to recover through its own abilities. This can be helped through yoga, meditation and massage.

Diet is central to both Naturopathy and Ayurveda. Natural diets help prevent illness and increase energy. While Naturopathy allow for raw vegetables and organic meats, Ayurveda promotes cooked vegetables and a vegetarian lifestyle, which is found to be easier on the digestive system. Both systems agree that healthy diets focus on the idea that the body is best equipped to process foods that are closest to nature. Therefore, avoiding excess sugar and choosing non-processed foods to ensure balance within the body.

Ayurveda has a strong focus on spices. Because poor digestion is often the root of disease and illness, due to a build-up of ama, spices are used to enhance the body’s ability to digest. Spices such as turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon are shown to enhance and cleanse the body and prevent digestive disorders.

These siblings; how do they differ?

Ayurveda is about balance. Naturopathy is about the healing power of nature. Both share the goals of reducing toxins in the body, modifying one’s lifestyle and bringing the body back to its most natural state. There are fewer differences between Naturopathy and Ayurveda than there are similarities. In fact, Naturopathy may be considered to have been birthed from Ayurveda practices.

By changing your lifestyle, and looking at the root cause of the illness, rather than simply treating the symptoms, you can protect yourself from unnecessary disease and illness.

More on these things :on further dates.

What about Money?

Blog | Wisdom | Experience
3 minutes read.
Let's talk about it.

What about "Wealth"?

You see, wealth is necessary; it helps to fulfill ones' main necessities. But when people starts relating their wants, desires and wishes as needs, no matter how much wealth one allocates, it won't ever be of suffice for them.
Why? you may ask. Cos' wants are limitless. One goes, several comes in. And to complete those wishes, humans start to make accumulating wealth as their main goal. Then he starts to become greedy. He forgets that the purpose of life is to be closer to that ultimate truth or consciousness but becomes indulged in these puny desires to accumulate what one day will be gone.
These greedy people will still be angry and in pain, lying on the their death bed, thinking what they didn't get, thinking what has been left to achieve. Even being on his last moment, he won't even think for a second about that ultimate consciousness. He doesn't even realizes how wasteful his life has been, running after temporary things.

Just like that businessman

That businessman who had everything; who had all the wealth to fulfill his needs. He had a house, a small one but more than enough for his family. He had no issues in fulfilling the needs of all. Everyone in his family were fully fed and sheltered and insured. He had a good social status as well.

But...

But, he was always in deep stress. He was always thinking of how he can enhance his wealth. Although he had everything, a house, food on the table, clothes to wear, a loving wife, two healthy children, he was never happy inside. Because he was always thinking of what - what things he didn't have.
One day, someone said to him that by doing certain things he can fulfill all his desires. Being consumed by greed, he started doing all those required tasks; be it good or bad, would it even matter? To him?
After years and years of strong dedication, he was finally able to fulfill all his wishes. He had became so strong and able that once he place his foot on something, it would become his.
But... only one thing he couldn't fulfill was his greed.
One step, two steps, three steps.... it went on and on. It went on to the point where he couldn't gather a strength to move a single step. He had became old and feeble. All his life, was spent running. Neither he cherished what he had, nor he was ever satisfied.
The only wealth that was left were the clothes and jewelry on his body. And that also deemed not worthy enough.
He had nothing but everything but now he have everything but nothing.
That also wouldn't matter now. Would it?
.......
"The family?", you may ask. They were long gone, and the bitter part is he didn't even remember when and how.

The bottom line :

Knowing the differences between the necessities and desires is must. And many of us fail in this. We add desires to necessities and ruin the essence of it.
No matter how much wealth we may have or accumulate, after fulfilling the necessities, all are desires and wants.
There are loads of things that comes in between desires and wants. These all are time-bombs where you unsure about the time of explosion.
Sometimes you contain them, sometimes you let em go bOOm!

Now, let me ask you. What is "wealth"? Need or desire.

Pancha-mahabhutas; The 5 elements of nature

Info | Vedic wisdom | Knowledge
10 minutes  read.
The five elements

The Divine reveals the glories of this universe to mankind through Prakriti or Nature. No one can comprehend nature. It presides over the destinies of all creatures. Continual change is the very nature of creation. It is impermanent and immutable. The Creator is the only Unchanging eternal entity amongst this changing world.

The entire cosmic creation begins from the point of the Pancha Bhutas or the 5 elements. They are Earth or Prithvi, Water or Jal, Fire or Agni, Air or Vayu, Ether or Akash. These five elements contain five characteristics. They account for the five faculties of Shabda(sound),Sparsha(touch),Roopa(sight),Rasa(taste),Gandha (smell). Thus every individual has these distinct five faculties as each of these faculties has emanated from one particular element.

Akash or Ether is the first element and accounts for the emergence of the organ of hearing-the ear and is represented by sound. It represents the space in which everything takes place

The second element is Vayu or air and the skin is the product of the principle represented by touch. It represents the gaseous state of matter and is responsible for the respiratory system.

The third element is Agni or fire and the eye is the organ representing sight. It represents form without substance and is responsible for digestion and perception.

The fourth element is Jal or water and is represented by the organ tongue which is used for the dual function of taste and speech. It represents the liquid state of matter and is responsible for fluid metabolism in the body. Blood, lymph and other fluids are considered as water elements.

The fifth element is Prithvi or earth and the nose is the organ representing smell. It represents the solid state of matter and is responsible for the physical constitution of the body. Bones, tissues and teeth are considered as earth elements.

Earth or Akash is the most subtle element, each element in turn is used to create the next element, each less subtle than the next. The basest element earth can be perceived by all five senses sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. The next higher element water has no smell but can be heard, felt, seen and tasted. Next comes fire which can be heard, felt and seen. After that comes air which can be heard and felt. Last comes Akash which can only be heard.

Karmendriyas and Jnanendriyas

All the external sense organs which enable us to interact with the material objects of the world like the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin are called Jnanendriyas or organs of cognition and the internal organs of action that facilitates our sensory contact with the outer world like Speech and the mouth, Grasping and the hands, Walking and the feet, Procreation and the reproductive organs, Elimination and the Anus are called Karmendriyas.

The Karmendriyas perform acts in the world and receive knowledge while the Jnanendriyas discriminate the good and the bad and through the mind, offer them to the Atma. Thus these organs which are connected with Prakrithi can attain the Atma only through the mind. The combined operations of all these sense organs accounts for the human personality. The ten organs, the five elements and the mind constitute the Shodasha Kalas or the Sixteen Kalas. Every individual has these sixteen kalas but only the Divine is considered to have all these sixteen kalas in full perfection.

  1. Smell is associated with Earth element.
Particles of matter or the solid forms of earth impinge on the sensitive cells within the nose, the changes arising there from is recognized as smell by the corresponding brain centre which receives the sensory impulses from the olfactory region of the nose through the nerves.
  1. Taste is associated with water element.
The liquid forms of matter is characterised by fluidity. The sense of taste is imparted by the solution of any substance on the tongue. The changes are induced in the taste buds of the tongue and are conveyed to the corresponding brain centre through the sensory nerves.
  1. Shapes and forms are associated  with fire element.
Light energy in the visible spectrum is received and recognized by the eye. Thus this element represents that entity which provides definition to any material object. The perception of rupa or form is associated with this element.
  1. Touch is associated with air element.
Here it represents electro magnetic energy whose distinguishing feature is movement. When energy impinges on the skin as heat or electrical sensation, the impulses are carried through the sensory nerves to the corresponding centre in the brain. Touch is essential for this knowledge and the quality is attributed to vayu or energy in motion.
  1. Sound with ether element.
There is no sound propagation through a vacuum. Sound requires a medium. Speech is conveyed to the ears through air. Vibration of successive particles of a medium is propagated as a sound wave. These impulses are then carried by the auditory nerves to the relevant centre in the brain which interprets it as sound. Thus akash or space or ether is considered to be a conveyor of sound.

Thus the five great elements represent the universe of matter-energy.

Any imbalance in these five elements creates disharmony in the universe like natural disasters and disease in the human body.

In the Bhagvad Gita, Krushn says, ’’The five elements along with the mind, intellect and ego sense constitute the lower nature. Know my higher nature which is pure consciousness’’.

Just as the universe is made up of five elements, the mind is also made up of five elements in a subtle form. Depending on which of the elements dominate, the individual experiences different moods and sensations.

Some examples are:
  1. Feeling of heaviness, total comfort or discomfort- Earth element is dominant
  1. Feeling of oneness, togetherness, floating or flowing feeling- Water element is dominant.
  1. Feeling of wanting to keep moving, keep running away-Air element is dominant.
  1. Feeling of passion, fired by ambition-Fire element is dominant
  1. Feeling expansive and light-Space element is dominant.

To create a balancing effect of these five elements on the body and mind, Yoga, pranayama etc are the techniques generally adopted by men.

Thus, it can be said that these five elements are derivations and expressions of a Unifying Creative Principle which is unmanifested and one. They have to be understood both in a material sense and a subtle sense. One has to delve deep and extract the inner meaning within each one.

By Earth, it is not merely the physical terrain or the human body but the strength of mind, steadfastness, determination and uninterrupted advancement towards the goal.

By water, it implies the cohesive reality which flows into and holds all beings together and links each other to the Ultimate Reality.

By fire it does not only mean the Universal energy that radiates heat and light but the inner fire that removes the cloak of ignorance and destroys all our doubts and allows the Truth to shine despite all obstacles.

By air, it not only implies the rarified force that exists in the universe but the energy that allows digestion, removes wastes and ensures circulation in the human body. It regulates thoughts in our mind through steady breathing.

By space it means everything that encompasses us, the mind which is the vessel to receive all impressions, the heart which accepts love.

For eg. In a single living cell, the structure of the cell is the earth element, the liquid or cytoplasm within the cell membrane is the water element, the metabolic processes regulating the cell is the fire element, the gases regulating the functioning of the cell is the air element and the space occupied by the cell denotes the space element.

The five elements and Vishnu iconography

There is a curious link between these five elements and the Vishnu image portrayed in Vaishnavite temples. The Vishnu Puran and Garuda Puran refer to five forms of Vishnu-Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Narayana. The meanings of these names indicate a connection to the five elements.

1. Vasudeva means ‘’that in which all things abide ’’indicating the element ether.

2. Sankarshana means ‘complete attraction’ or squeezing together indicating the element of Aeriality.

3. Pradyumna means ‘the radiant one’ indicating the element fire.

4. Anirudha means ‘without obstacles’ indicating liquidity or water.

5. Narayana means ‘son of man, path of man, eternal man’ indicating the element earth.

The Five elements and Seven chakras

The five elements from which all creation is manifest are accessible through ‘Chakras’ located in the spinal area. The Chakras are energy centres in the astral body corresponding to five locations in the spinal region and two in the area of the brain. Each chakra is endowed with the capacity to awaken certain powerful features.

  1. Muladhara chakra or Root Chakra-it represents stability and support. It indicates Earth element.
  1. Swadishthan or Sacral chakra- it represents joy and general sense of well being. It indicates Water element
  1. Manipura or Solar plexus chakra- it represents power and wisdom. It indicates Fire element.
  1. Anahata or heart chakra-It represents love, forgiveness, compassion to all. It indicates Air element.
  1. Vishuddha or throat chakra-It represents faith in ourselves, trust in others, creativity. It indicates ether element.
  1. Ajna or brow chakra- It represents knowledge, dignity, intuition. It indicates ether element.
  1. Sahasrara or crown chakra- It represents perfect balance, oneness with the universe. It indicates ether element.

The Five elements and the Doshas or intrinsic tendencies

The five mahabhutas are present in the body and are represented in the form of doshas. There are three doshas vata, pitha and kapha meaning air, bile and phlegm. Doshas are very important as they form the basis for the maintenance of sound health, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Each person is born with a particular proportion of these three doshas. Each dosha has specific organs or locations in which it is primarily found. If the balance between the doshas is disturbed, disharmony is created internally as well as with the external energy system and this results in disease.

Vata is composed of the elements space and air, pitha of fire and water, kapha of earth and water. Thus the physical and mental qualities of each dosha will reflect the elemental qualities of the element it is related to. Thus Vata types are thin, fast moving and quick thinking. Pitha types have an oily skin and fiery personality and Kapha types have solid body frames and calm temperament.

Since the doshas are the combination of the elements and the elements are the building blocks of everything in the universe, the forces of doshas are present in everything in the universe. We can see these primal energies in our bodily functions, in the seasons of the year and the times of day. Unlike the elements, the presence of doshas can be observed as we can see the effects of their presence. Vata is the force of wear and tear that results in destruction or degeneration of the universe, Pitha maintains the creation and kapha is considered to be the creative force.

Fire, Air and Ether elements are light and tend to move upward. They move the energies of the doshas upwards producing lightness. Earth and water elements are heavy and move downwards producing heaviness in the body.

Taste and the five elements

There are six tastes in the human body. They are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent.

Tastes act upon the doshas and either increase or decrease the quality of the doshas. Given below is the particular type of taste and it’s corresponding predominant element.

  • Sweet- earth and water.
  • Sour-earth and fire
  • salty-water and fire
  • pungent-air and fire
  • bitter-air and ether
  • astringent-air and earth

The three vital essences and the five elements

The three doshas have subtle counterparts Prana, Ojas and Tejas. Prana(vata dosha) relates to the air element. Tejas(pitha dosha) relates to the fire element. Ojas(kapha dosha) relates to the water element. They are the positive essences of the three doshas and they control the body-mind functions. They keep us free from diseases and promote positive health.

Prana
It is the subtle energy behind all mind-body functions and the primal life force. It is responsible for the coordination of breath, senses and mind. At the deepest levels of consciousness it governs the development of the higher states of consciousness.

The five prana vayus are apana, vyana, samana, prana, udana.

  1. Apana is located in the lower extremities and is responsible for excretion. It is related to the earth element.
  2. Vyana is located all over the body. It enables circulation and is related to the water element.
  3. Samana is located in the navel. It regulates metabolism and digestion and is related to the fire element.
  4. Prana is located in the chest and lungs and is responsible for breathing. It is related to the air element.
  5. Udana is located in the throat and enables speech and communication. It is related to the ether element.

Tejas
It is the subtle energy of fire, the inner radiance through which we digest impressions and thoughts. It enables the mind to perceive and judge correctly. At the deepest levels of consciousness it gives spiritual insight.

Ojas
It is the subtle energy of water, fed through sensory impressions of taste and smell. It provides stability and endurance. At the deepest levels of consciousness it is the material power from which the soul produces the energy bodies and provides nourishment to higher states of consciousness.

Vastu and the five elements

Vastu or the Indian Feng shui is the ancient Vedic tradition of combining architecture and land development with the energies of the five elements and the cardinal directions. Living in accordance with Vastu is said to solve most of life’s problems. The balance or imbalance among the elements determine the conditions of one’s living space.

  1. Water
Water is associated with conception of new ideas, thoughts, healing energy, restoration of health etc. Water dominates the North direction in buildings. When water is in a balanced state in a building, it induces a spiritual and philosophical attitude to life. For eg-placement of water sources like wells, water tanks etc in the North direction gives maximum advantage.
  2. Air
Air represents growth and is associated with movement, joy and happiness. Air dominates the East direction. When air is in a balanced state, it induces courage and perseverance to achieve your goals. For eg-placement of doors, windows etc should be in the East or North east direction to get maximum benefit
  3. Fire
Fire is the driving force behind all life processes and South is the direction of fire. When it is in a balanced state, it induces power, confidence, fame recognition and money. For eg-geysers, fireplace and kitchen in the South/South east direction would provide maximum benefits.
  4. Earth
Earth represents stability and balance and dominates Centre and Diagonal directions. When it is in a balanced state, it induces stability and a feeling of peace and harmony. for eg-Since earth is connected to all five senses of the human body, sleeping with the head towards the south helps us to draw maximum positive energy from the cosmos.
  5. Space
Space represents expansion and enhancement and dominates the Western direction. When it is in a balanced state, it induces knowledge and awareness to understand new and creative ideas. For eg- the Brahmasthan or the central portion should be built in such a way that light enters its centre and it should always be kept open.

Since these five elements are related to our five senses taste, smell, hear, touch and sight the aim of Vastu Shastra is to enable a perfect construction and to correct the internal and external imbalances and ensure a peaceful and stress free life.

How elements are represented throughout the world?

The Sri Chakra and the five elements

The Sri Chakra is considered to be the abode of the Divine Mother or the Goddess Lalitambika. The five downward pointing triangles in the Sri Chakra represent the Shakti principle and from them arise the five elements or the Pancha Mahabhutas indicating creation. The four upward pointing triangles represent the Shiva principle indicating dissolution. The union of the two causes the chakra of creation to evolve. Harmony in creation implies balance in the elements.

The Taittiriya Upanishad states that all creation is made up of these five elements which came from the Supreme Being. From the self (atma) space came into being, from space came air, from air came fire, from fire water, from water earth, from earth man and man has within himself the self (atma).

Thus, it is considered that the energy of the five elements is what awakens a person’s divine channels. They are considered the five pillars of creation. When the spiritual energy of an individual is awakened, it awakens the energy of the five elements. Once he is aligned with the energy of the elements through advanced techniques , miracles begin to happen. He can heal others by connecting directly to the cosmic energy. This brings the highest peace, opens the heart, increases willpower and mental clarity and creates positive vibrations. Wisdom grows and life becomes more successful.

The Lord is the inner energy hidden in the five elements as the Creator. Understanding this inner energy and purifying it washes out negative illusions and creates a balancing effect in the five elements. This leads to ‘Sthithaprajna’ or a state of equilibrium.

Buddhist Philosophy on elements

In Buddhism, the first four elements are regarded as the base and the four properties associated are

  1. water-cohesion or fluidity,
  2. earth-solidity or inertia,
  3. air-expansion or vibration,
  4. fire-heat or energy content

In Buddhism the four elements are a basis for understanding and for liberating oneself from suffering.

  • Earth element includes hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, bones and other physical or solid material of the body
  • Water element includes bile, blood, sweat, urine and other liquid elements of the body.
  • Air element includes internal air elements like respiratory system (breathing),intestinal system(wind in the bowels and other regions) of the body.
  • Fire element includes internal fire mechanisms that provide digestion, warmth and other metabolic processes.
  • Two more elements ie the space element and the consciousness element are sometimes referred to in certain Buddhist texts.

According to Buddhist philosophy the four elements give rise to the five aggregates which are the ultimate basis of suffering which helps man to seek the four basic truths as expounded by Buddha.

Four elements— Form—Five aggregates—Suffering—Four noble truths

Aggregates
They are the five aspects that constitute the sentient beingThey are form or matter, sensation or feeling, perception or cognition, mental formations or impulses and consciousness or discernment. The aggregates progress from form to feeling to perception to mental formations to consciousness.

Buddha is often compared to a great physician and his teachings are compared to medicine.

The four Noble truths:

  1. The truth of suffering-identifying the illness and the nature of the illness (the diagnosis)
  2. The truth of the origin of suffering-identifying the causes of the illness (the etiology)
  3. The truth of cessation of suffering-identifying a cure for the illness (the prognosis)
  4. The truth of the path leading to cessation of suffering- recommending treatment for the illness to bring about a cure (the prescription)

It is said that the brilliance of Buddha’s philosophy was that it had as its aim the reliving of suffering hence no speculation, no belief about God, no leap of faith, nothing metaphysical was needed. It could be practiced by anyone, anywhere as the teaching is universal and experienced by all and its primary goal is the “Suffering and the end of suffering”

Thus to understand Buddha’s teachings, it is necessary to have a deep insight to the elements and progress upto the goal of life which is the end of suffering and ultimately attain Divine bliss.

Chinese philosophy on elements

In this they have five elements Fire, earth, metal, water and wood. These elements are seen as ever changing and moving. There are two cycles of balance, one creation and the other destruction.

  • Creation(generating)
  • Destruction(overcoming)

Greek Philosophy on elements

According to Greek philosophy the four elements are fire, earth, air and water. The Macrocosmic manifestations of the elements are the land, the sea, the sky and the sun. They are connected with the sublunary spheres Heaven, Earth, Abyss(the subterranean water) and Tartaros (the subterranean fire). The microcosmic manifestations are the components of the human psyche-mental, astral, etheric and physical bodies. The elements also represent the stages in various processes of growth and transformation.

  • Earth is considered to be cool and dry, passive and rigid and therefore psychologically predominant in persons who focus extensively on physical reality and exhibit qualities of perseverance and realism.
  • Water is considered to be fluid and associated with union and transformation and therefore psychologically predominant in persons who tend to be flexible, flowing and inclined towards deep feeling.
  • Fire is considered to be hot and fiery and is associated with metabolic processes and therefore psychologically associated with the qualities of energy, assertiveness and passion.
  • Air is considered to be moist and warm and associated with differentiation and flexibility and therefore psychologically associated with the qualities of discrimination, critical thinking and knowledge.

In Greek philosophy Air has an essential role as the Spirit which unites the Mind with the Body. Air is important as a mediating element .It is considered the most spiritual element for it corresponds to the Spirit Breath and the Spirited Soul which unite the mind and body. It also constitutes the Cosmic Breath which unites our individual soul to the Universal World Soul.

The Elements and Western Astrology

Western Astrology deals with four elements earth, air, water and fire. Each element is associated with subtle qualities and the birth chart of each individual gives a mix of these elements. Each element is assigned three signs called Zodiac signs (signs which are assigned according to the month of birth) The signs of a grouping exhibit certain similar characteristics.

Fire Signs
Inspired, outgoing, active-deals with the spirit. They are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Fire creates warmth and passion. Too much fire means taking unnecessary risks and surging forward without consideration for others. Too little fire means there’s no joy in life, things seem repetitive, mundane and superficial. The ways to create a balance are to be enthusiastic about ideas but follow them diligently one at a time, feel joyful of life etc.

Air Signs
Ideas, concepts-deals with the mind. They are Libra, Gemini and Aquarius.

Air is about breath, thoughts and currents. Too much air leads to too many thoughts, highly strung and too much dissipation of energy through excessive talk, work etc. Too little air implies not being objective, becoming easily bored and apathetic. The ways to create an air balance is to cultivate healthy ways to burn off excess energy and keep the mind calm.

Water Signs
Imaginative, introverted-deals with the emotions. They are Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo.

Water purifies and cleanses, too much water means unable to see with detachment and heavy with emotional baggage. Too little water implies dry, brittle, harsh with ourselves and others unable to find consolation. The ways to create a water balance are physically connecting oneself to more water spots, eating more fruits and vegetables with added water content etc.

Earth Signs
Practical, grounded-deals with the body. They are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

Earth connects us to bodily pleasures like taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. Too much earth means too wordly, sensual and attached. Too less earth means unable to be grounded, to grasp reality and to think concretely. The ways to create an earth balance is to spend more time with nature, give adequate time to bodily needs etc.

Thus the key to a harmonious life is correcting all the imbalances in these elements in us and leading an enriched and fulfilling life.

Tarot cards
In this a deck of cards with symbolic imagery is used to serve as a means to stimulate our intuition and help us to tap into the unconscious parts of ourselves. The deck is divided into four separate suits Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles and each suit represents a particular energy and is associated to an element. Understanding the characteristics of each suit and their correlating element deepens one’s understanding of the various Tarot card meanings.

  • Wands-Element is fire and signifies action, movement, fertility etc.
  • Cups-Element is Air and signifies ideas, concepts, abstract thinking etc.
  • Swords-Element is Water and signifies emotions, love, compassion etc.
  • Pentacles-Element is Earth and signifies physical body, possessions etc.

Bottom line

Thus it can be seen that the elements in creation form the fundamental unit to the secret of the entire Universe and a deep understanding of the elements ,its significance and its subtle effects is the key to leading an Ideal Life of Peace, Prosperity and Eternal Happiness.

Black Rice: Why is it a superfood

Info | Trending Q/A | Super food

The Story of Black rice

Long ago in ancient China, black rice was considered so rare and nutritious that royalty reserved it only for themselves, believing the mysterious dark grain would give them longer life.

According to a legend, some thousands years ago, the Chinese noblemen would take possession of all black rice and forbade anyone who did not belong to royalty from eating it.

During those times black rice was only grown in limited quantities, and only the noblemen were permitted to eat it.

This practice gave this rice the name forbidden rice. According to Japanese researchers, the color of black rice was caused by gene mutation.

According to the researchers, a rearrangement in the gene called Kala4 activated the production of anthocyanins.

They concluded that the rearrangement must have occurred in the tropical japonica species of rice and later this black rice trait was transferred to other varieties of rice through cross-breeding

Luckily for us commoners, black rice is no longer rare or forbidden. Today you can easily find it online and in natural food stores along with many regular grocery stores.

But the emperors were right about one thing: Black rice is packed with nutrition.

Chris Kilham, a medicinal hunter says:

"
According to traditional lore, black rice, a popular superfood, was once consumed only by royalty. Known alternately as forbidden rice, emperor’s rice, or longevity rice, black rice is actually a dark purple grain. Cultivated throughout Asia, black rice is now taking a place on the world stage as a superfood with novel and highly beneficial attributes.
For those who grew up on Minute Rice and Uncle Ben’s, it may come as a surprise to discover a plethora of colorful rice, including white, beige, brown, green, red, and the fabled black varieties. Different types of black rice are cultivated throughout China, Southeast Asia and India, and the star of this grain is rising.
Black rice owes its deep color to a range of naturally-occurring compounds called anthocyanins. These are the same agents found in the purple berries like acai, blueberry, blackberry. Anthocyanins have garnered well-deserved attention as a class of extraordinary beneficial agents that reduce the aging of cells, stem inflammation, enhance eyesight, improve many aspects of cardiovascular health, enhance brain function, and help to stabilize blood sugar. All of the buzz about pomegranate, cranberry, and many other red-to-purple foods is due to their concentration of anthocyanins— they are the big dudes in antioxidants.
At the same time that black rice offers health benefits galore, it also satisfies the palate. These varieties of rice have a delicate, nutty aroma when cooked, and offer satisfying, complex flavor. This makes black rice more than a starch— the addition of black rice to any meal with vegetables, fish, or meat transforms a dining experience. The exquisite fragrance and flavor combination offered by this grain makes a welcome contribution to any meal.
For those who are on gluten-free diets, black rice is good news, as it contains no gluten at all. But the grain is high in dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamin E, some of the B vitamins, and minerals. The big action is unquestionably with the purple anthocyanins, which are so concentrated in black rice that it tops blueberries for antioxidant activity.

The three big categories of benefit from eating black rice are improved antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory action, and appetite and fat-controlling properties. The potent antioxidant activity of the anthocyanins in black rice switches on genes in the body that control the production of cell-protective agents. The anti-inflammatory activity of these same purple compounds helps to reduce the risk of virtually every chronic degenerative disease, from cardiovascular disease to skin ailments. But it is the appetite and fat-controlling aspects of black rice that have attracted the most attention among health researchers.
In the quest to reverse obesity in the global population, researchers have sought agents that can  improve the production of a protein in the body known as adiponectin, and decrease levels of the appetite-regulating hormone leptin.  This signals the body that you have eaten enough. Enter black rice, seemingly tailor-made for the task. Black rice offers hope to those who wish to control their weight. Among the various  anthocyanins in black rice, one known as C3G, or Cyanidin-3-glucoside demonstrates appetite satisfying properties by boosting adiponectin and decreasing blood levels of leptin. This makes black rice a satiety food. It tells your body that you are full, and you are no longer hungry. In simpler terms, eat black rice; feel full.
But that’s not all. Japanese researchers have found that C3G also causes the body to burn stored fat, and to help to establish a healthier body weight overall. This activity is of great interest to athletes, who are seeking a more stable level of blood sugar during exertion. But this is of greatest interest to those who struggle with their weight. Black rice can make a positive contribution to steady, even weight control, by reducing appetite and using up stored fat.
Thanks to endless curiosity about foods, coupled with modern science, we are able to plumb the depths of nutrition, furthering our understanding of how traditional foods enhance health in modern terms. Black rice, also known as longevity rice, earned its reputation as a life-enhancing treasure centuries ago, and continues to demonstrate powerful health benefits today."

Black Rice Nutrition

One-quarter cup of uncooked black rice provides:

 160 calories
  • 4 g of protein
  • 1.5 g of fat
  • 34 g of carbohydrates
  • 1 g of fiber
  • 1 mg of iron

Compared to brown and white rice, black rice has more protein. "This makes black rice a better choice if you want to build muscle," says Sandra J. Arevalo, MPH, RDN, CDN, CLC, CDE, FADA, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

One serving of black rice also provides 6% of your daily requirements of iron, a mineral we need to keep our blood strong and supply oxygen to our cells. A lack of iron can lead to anemia, a common problem among women, young children and older adults.

Finally, black rice delivers fiber. One serving provides 4% of your daily fiber needs, knocking the socks off white rice, a refined grain with no fiber to speak of.

As you may already know, most of us don't get enough fiber—so adding some from whole grains is important. It's recommended women get 25 grams of fiber per day, and men 38 grams.

Of course, fiber helps keep you regular—but it does much more than that. Research shows the fiber found in black rice and other whole grains can help you lose weight and lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and some kinds of cancer, including cancers of the colon, stomach, rectum and ovaries.

Health benefits of black rice

1. Rich in antioxidants

Black rice is a rich source of anthocyanin antioxidants, which are known to fight cancer and prevent heart ailments.

The bran hull of black rice contains more anthocyanins than any other food including brown rice and red quinoa.

The dark color of this rice is an indication of its high antioxidant content, as is the case with antioxidant-rich berries like blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries.

Black rice also contains antioxidant vitamin E, which helps keep eyes and skin healthy and also helps boost the immune system.

2. Improves heart health

Black rice is rich in fiber, which helps in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. According to a 2001 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, black rice decreases atherosclerotic plaque formation and increases antioxidant status in rabbits.

When the plaque builds up in the arteries, it causes them to harden and become blocked, which can lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Black rice is also one of the most abundant sources of anthocyanins. These antioxidants can protect the heart muscles and blood vessels from oxidative damage.

They also help rejuvenate the cardiovascular system and repair the damaged tissue.

3. Detoxifies the body

Forbidden black rice is a rich and natural detoxifying agent for the body. The phytonutrients in black rice help remove harmful toxins from the liver.

Black rice helps in treating fatty liver disease, which leads to excessive fat deposits in the liver.

According to a 2012 study, black rice extract supplemented diet helps reduce the risk of hepatic steatosis and related disorders.

The researchers concluded that black rice might help in preventing fatty liver disease.

4. Improves digestion

Black rice has higher fiber content as compared to white rice. The fiber helps regulate bowel movements, prevents constipation and also diarrhea and bloating.

The American diet is generally low in fiber content. Eating black rice is an excellent way to in add fiber to your diet.

Fiber is also needed by the body to clear the toxins and reduce inflammation. Increased fiber intake is helpful in treating many gastrointestinal disorders like gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcer, diverticulitis, constipation, and hemorrhoids.

5. Gluten free

Black rice is gluten-free and easy to digest. So it is a healthy option for those who have a gluten allergy or celiac disease.

Gluten sensitivity can lead to bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nutrient deficiencies and an increased risk of developing the leaky gut syndrome.

Since this grain is also rich in fiber, vitamin E, B vitamins, and anthocyanins, it is also a healthy replacement for other, other grains.

6. Protects against cancer

Forbidden rice is rich in anthocyanins, which help prevent free radical damage that can lead to cancer.

According to a 2006 study published in Chemical-Biological Interactions, black rice anthocyanins inhibit cancer cell invasion.

The antioxidant properties of anthocyanins have anti-metastatic effects. Another, more recent study showed that black rice anthocyanins possess anti-metastatic properties against human breast cancer cells.

7. Prevents diabetes

Black rice is a rich source of dietary fiber and antioxidants because, in black rice, the bran of grain is intact.

Dietary fiber plays a vital role in slowing down the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream, which helps in lowering the risk of diabetes.

In 2010, researchers compared brown rice to white rice concerning type 2 diabetes risk.

The researchers concluded that substituting whole grains, including brown rice, for white rice may lower risk of diabetes .

This shows that carbohydrate intake in the form of whole grains like black and brown rice is better in preventing diabetes.

8. Weight management

Black rice is low in calories and high in fiber content, which makes it the perfect food for weight loss. The dietary fiber in black rice helps you feel fuller for longer after meals, which helps in weight loss.

According to a study from Hanyang University, Korea, meal replacement with mixed rice is more effective than white rice in weight control, while improving antioxidant enzyme activity in obese women.

9. Boosts brain function

Several studies have linked oxidative stress to cognitive decline and memory impairment. Antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, have a beneficial impact on cognitive outcomes.

According to a research of seven different studies, food-based anthocyanins consumption leads to improvement in many cognitive outcomes like verbal learning and memory .

During an animal-based study, when female Wistar rats were treated with anthocyanins for 15 days, it improved their learning and memory function.

Black rice is one of the richest sources of anthocyanins, so it offers all the benefits of anthocyanins.

10. Improve eye health

Anthocyanins present in black rice are also helpful in improving eyesight. According to a 2013 study from China, black rice anthocyanidins improve retinal damage caused by phytochemical stress in rats. Black rice also contains vitamin E, which is excellent for eye health.

Black rice vs. other rice

Different types of rice differ in their nutrient content. From the nutrient standpoint, both brown and black rice is superior to white rice. Black rice has higher fiber content, but red rice is richer in iron than black rice.

  • Polished white rice (100 grams) contains: 6.8 grams proteins, 1.2 grams iron and .6 grams fiber
  • Brown rice (100 grams) contains: 7.9 grams proteins, 2.2 grams iron, and 2.8 grams fiber
  • Red rice (100 grams) contains: 7 grams proteins, 5.5 grams iron and 2 grams fiber
  • Black rice (100 grams) contains: 8.5 grams proteins, 3.5 grams iron and 4.9 grams fiber

Both black rice and brown rice contain trace amounts of arsenic, which is absorbed from the soil.

Rinsing this rice in water and cooking it in 8 to 10 part of water per one part of rice can reduce the arsenic levels in this rice.

Where to buy black rice?

You can find black rice in health food stores, gourmet grocery stores and even online. Supermarkets here in Nepal also keep black rice in stock.

Check the packet of the rice to ensure that you are getting 100 percent whole grain black rice.
You can also buy from our official-site. Click here to go to grab your packet.

How to cook black rice?

  1. Black rice takes longer to cook than white rice. It would help if you soaked it for a few hours before cooking to lessen its cooking time.
  2. After soaking it for a few hours, you can rinse the rice and prepare it for cooking. Add 2 to 3 cups of water to one cup of rice and bring it to a boil.
  3. After that let the rice simmer till all the liquid is completely absorbed. You can also cook this rice like pasta.
  4. To one cup of rice, add at least 8 to 10 cups of water and boil. Drain out the excess water when the rice is thoroughly cooked.
  5. Black rice can also be cooked in chicken stock, vegetable broth and coconut water.

Final thoughts

Black or forbidden rice, a variety of rice that was once reserved only for the nobility, is fast gaining popularity amongst the health enthusiasts.

Its rich nutritional content provides a range of health benefits including improved heart health, better digestion, cancer prevention, and weight loss.

So, add this rice with its unique nutty flavor to your diet and enjoy its benefits.

Starting a natural, Non-Toxic Habits ?

Information | Tips
6 minutes read

Here is my how with baby steps.

BULLET tips (10) to Begin Your Natural, Non-Toxic Lifestyle

Natural, non-toxic living! Sounds great right? Well, it is. It is one of the best changes you can make for your family. However, it can be overwhelming at first. How do you even begin toxin-free living? Where do you start? Do you need to throw away everything in your house and start over? In a perfect world, maybe. But, we have to factor in time, money, and the fact that most of us do live with other human beings. Because of this, I’ve created ten easy steps on how to begin natural living! This is not all-inclusive list of every single step to take to become truly “crunchy”. It is, however, an excellent resource to get you started on the path toward non-toxic living.

These are the steps that I personally took on my own journey toward a healthy, natural lifestyle. In fact, some of these steps I am currently taking or have been working toward accomplishing! I began my journey toward natural living because I felt the Lord telling me to simplify; therefore I want to make this process simple, organized, and straightforward for you. It is also important to make these changes cost effective!  You can follow these steps at the pace your family, budget, and schedule allow.

Now, before we begin, I want to make this very clear–do not get discouraged! Don’t read this post halfway through and think, nope, too much, can’t do it. This is a process. It takes time. We have lives, jobs, habits, and families. I have been doing this for three years and I am still in the process of cleaning up my life and home. These are the steps that I have taken and the areas that are, in my opinion, priority. I like to see the big picture and then set up a plan based on that. That is what I have outlined for you here.

Just remember, each change is a win! I cannot stress this enough! Even switching out one product or using one reusable item is a huge win! So, celebrate every positive change you have made, don’t get discouraged, stay organized, and press on!

I am not going to go into great detail about the negative effects of every chemical or product I list in the article; that would become a twenty page essay! Feel free to do your own research, however, know that I have chosen these changes for myself because the threats are real and they are scientifically backed. So, here we go!

1. Clean up your cosmetics

This was my first move toward natural living. When I started researching what was in my beauty products and makeup I was horrified. Parabens and phthalates are the big ones to look for. Triclosan should be avoided as well, and the FDA finally got on board with this one and banned it. If you see something with triclosan, steer clear. Parabens and phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals. Parabens are pretty easy to find–propylparaben and methylparaben. Phthalates, however, are sneaky. They are usually disguised as “fragrance (parfum)”.

Unfortunately, even many of the organic and natural brands hide these nasty chemicals in them, so you really have to look at the ingredient list before purchasing. Be sure to look for “phthalate free” on the label. What products to check? Pretty much anything you put on your body–moisturizer, sunscreen, makeup, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, shaving cream, baby lotion, diaper cream, etc.

This can be overwhelming, so just begin to replace these products as needed, and find better natural alternatives. You can easily visit the product section here to get a head start.Ready to take the first steps toward natural, non-toxic living? 2. Choose clean produce and meat

If you can avoid even a little pesticide residue, it is beneficial. Going completely organic can be a little too much for some people, as it can get expensive. Right away, I chose the things I ate most and bought them organic. This is especially important for produce that does not have a skin. For me it was apples, lettuce, spinach, pears, and carrots. Another hack you can use is to buy bulk frozen organic vegetables.

I recommend choosing at least one of your most consumed meats and making the switch. Chicken = free, range, antibiotic and hormone free. Beef = 100% grass-fed, antibiotic and hormone free. Fish = wild-caught. Also, speak with your meat manager at your grocery store to find out exactly where your meat is coming from.

3. Rid your home of artificial fragrance

This is an absolute must! These items continually blow toxic fumes into your home. Bathroom air refreshers, room sprays, plug-ins, scented candles, perfume, body mist, basically anything with a smell is probably full of toxic chemicals. Replacements?

We all want nice smelling homes, right? Essential oils. Beeswax candles. DIY room sprays. An essential oil diffuser is a great tool for this. If money is tight, I would recommend lavender, pine, lemon, cedarwood, cinnamon leaf, and sweet orange* for air refreshing purposes.

4. Avoid processed vegetable oils

Processed oils can contribute to inflammation, mess up the omega fatty acid ratio of your body, cause heart disease, and are just very unhealthy. Begin by switching out your cooking oils—phase out any canola, vegetable, peanut, or soybean oils.

I use avocado oil for high heat, coconut oil, beef tallow, pastured lard, grass fed butter, or ghee for medium heat, and extra virgin olive oil for dressings. The next step, and honestly the hardest one, is to start looking for these vegetables oils in your food and finding better alternatives. Places to look–canned beans, chips, crackers, tortillas, popcorn, trail mix, and anything preserved.

5. Switch out your cleaning products

This was a big one for me. One day realized I did not need a separate cleaning product for every surface in my home. I tossed them all and made one all-purpose cleaner for everything. Household cleaners may contain carcinogens, poison, and severe lung irritants.

You don’t need all that toxicity unless you are planning on killing off the bubonic plague in your home. I now use only my DIY all-purpose cleaner and castile soap + baking soda as a scrub. Essential oils are also great for non-toxic cleaning.

6. Embrace a natural laundry routine

Friends, this is another big one. Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and fabric softeners are toxic. You are putting clothes, blankets, and towels on your body 24/7 and those chemicals are in contact with your skin all the time. Why do you think the first step to treat an unknown rash is to change laundry detergents? Among many other things, they are irritating and carcinogenic. Other options? Find a natural laundry soap that you like, and use white vinegar and wool dryer balls as softeners.Ready to take the first steps toward natural, non-toxic living? Follow my ten easy steps and get a free worksheet at Naturally Free Life! #naturalliving #nontoxichome

7. Ditch the refined sugar and flour

White sugar, refined flour, and simple carbs can lead to obesity, heart disease, insulin resistance, and a myriad of other health problems. An entire book could be written on this. In fact, they have been written. Reduce your intake of these things as much as you can. I choose coconut sugar, honey, pure maple syrup, and stevia as sweeteners. I look for  buckwheat flour, quinoa flour, brown rice flour, sprouted grains, quinoa, buckwheat, or brown rice. Thrive Market is a great place to get started with healthy snacks, flours, and baking needs.

8. Reduce garbage

Recycling should be your last resort, because the energy it takes to recycle is not exactly eco-friendly. Look for ways to prevent garbage from even accumulating. Drink from reusable stainless steel or glass water bottles and coffee mugs. Invest in a few reusable grocery totes. Bring reusable produce bags to the store with you. Embrace cloth wipes and diapers. Get a compost bin going! Right now, I am on a mission to make reusable storage bags and I am also working out a system for reusable bamboo towels. Buying in bulk is a huge help if you have the storage. Take advantage of the bulk bins at your grocery store! Join an organic food co-op like Azure Standard.

9. Phase out plastic

Oh plastic, where to start! Unfortunately, our government has failed us in that they have let the plastic industry pollute this country with so many toxic and dangerous products that it is impossible to get away from it. This goes for styrofoam as well. Plastic can contain endocrine disrupting and carcinogenic chemicals, which include polyvinyl chloride, phthalates, and BPA.  Use glass jars for storage, glass or stainless steel cups for drinking, ceramic or bamboo plates, wooden cooking utensils, wooden or natural rubber baby toys, reusable storage bags, and reusable grocery totes.Ready to take the first steps toward natural, non-toxic living? Follow my ten easy steps and get a free worksheet at Naturally Free Life! #naturalliving #nontoxichome

10. Choose non-toxic cookware

Non-stick teflon contains toxic chemicals called PFCs. When those pans get scratched, these chemicals are released into our food. Bake with over safe glass or ceramic. Cook with cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic coated pots and pans. This is the cast iron skillet that I use in my home–ideal for frying, sautéing, and roasting. I also have a cast iron pan that was passed down from my grandmother I love. If you can find one of those, I highly recommend keeping it! Stainless steel is good for boiling and making sauces.

Well there you have it! Ten easy steps toward a natural, non-toxic lifestyle. This is an absolutely wonderful thing to do for your family, and like I said earlier, each and every win counts! Each change is leading you toward a safer, less-toxic, all natural lifestyle for you, your family, and your home.

Cholesterol: What really it is?

Information | Remedy

10 minutes read on Cholesterol effects.

Knowing what Cholesterol is

Cholesterol is a substance in our body that has a smooth and fatlike appearance (the hump on your hand or back ?!). It helps in making the outer cell membrane stable.

Same as other chemicals and hormones, cholesterol is crucial in the body for conducting certain activities.

Did you know: that our body needs high amount of cholesterol to function normally?

Although higher amounts of it is not usually needed, when there is excess of it then the body deposits it along the lining of our artery walls.

Food has huge and direct influence when it comes to cholesterol levels. So, if you are having issues related with cholesterol (heart and bile function, alleviated blood pressure, artery function) then there is high chance that the egg you eat with bread or bacon; just this (and many) mornings is probably causing the rise in cholesterol level.

Why do we need Cholesterol?

Our body uses it to build the structure of cell membranes, make hormones (estrogen, testosterone and adrenal). Cholesterol is also essential to produce vitamin D and bile acids in the body. These help the body to better digest fat and keep the body to function properly.

There are, of course, situations when the cholesterol is high and when this happens, the body deposits the cholesterol in the bloodstream. In fact, there is much more cholesterol in the blood, then it probably will end up in the coronary arteries inside the heart or the carotid arteries inside the brain. Both of these arteries bring blood to legs and intestines. Cholesterol deposits block the arteries and interfere with the blood supply.

Now, you might want to know who have high cholesterol rates. The answer is simple, if there are lumps on your body, higher fat percentage or if you are suffering from high blood pressure and other heart related diseases, prone to diabetes and other cardiovascular related diseases then, you are probably having higher amount of cholesterol and if you are functioning slowly, symptoms of depression and anxiety, fear in mind, etc., then you may have lower than required cholesterol level.

Japanese people have lower cholesterol rate. This makes them less prone to develop any heart related diseases. Whereas, more than 71 % of Americans have higher bad cholesterol level.

What is causing higher Cholesterol level

The most primary causes are unhealthy diet and in-appropriate lifestyle. And, this is not my saying but of doctors all around the globe. 1,000s of researches have been conducted on this topic and all are pointing to the same thing.

There are cases in which high cholesterol is directly related to genes, but it is mainly happening due to excess weight and bad lifestyle choices. Over-weight increases the LDL (Low Density Lipid), also commonly known as bad-cholesterol, and that is why losing weight may help in maintaining it.

Now, there is another major factor affecting the cholesterol level. It is Alcohol !!!
Well, this might make me unpopular but you need to lower your alcohol use as much as you can. It is quite amusing that how one or two glasses of this can increases the normal cholesterol but the bad cholesterol remains unaffected.

We have two types of cholesterol in our body. HDL (High Density Lipid), which is good for us and LDL (Low Density Lipid) which is bad if in excess i.e more than 80mg/dL avg. Total Cholesterol Level count should be around 125-200mg/dL (>170mg/dL for below 18).

In Nepal, acc. to researches, people with more than 40 years of age have high amount of bad cholesterol in their body. It is reported, this is mostly due to high consumptions of junk and fast food, little or no physical exercises and daily lack of nutritious food

7 Evidence-Based Benefits of Wheatgrass

By Rachael Link, MS, RD

Popping up everywhere from juice bars to health food stores, wheatgrass is the latest ingredient to enter the limelight in the world of natural health.
Wheatgrass is prepared from the freshly sprouted leaves of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum.

It can be grown and prepared at home or purchased in juice, powder or supplement form.
Some claim it can do everything from detoxifying the liver to improving immune function. However, many of its purported benefits have not yet been proven or studied.

This article takes a closer look at 7 of the evidence-based benefits of drinking wheatgrass.

1. High in Nutrients and Antioxidants

Wheatgrass is an excellent source of many different vitamins and minerals. It is especially high in vitamins A, C and E, as well as iron, magnesium, calcium and amino acids. Of its 17 amino acids, eight are considered essential, meaning your body cannot produce them and you must obtain them from food sources.
Like all green plants, wheatgrass also consists of chlorophyll, a type of green plant pigment associated with many health benefits. It also contains several important antioxidants, including glutathione and vitamins C and E .
Antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals to prevent cell damage and reduce oxidative stress.
Some studies have found that antioxidants may help protect against certain conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis and neurodegenerative diseases .
In one study, wheatgrass decreased oxidative stress and improved cholesterol levels in rabbits fed a high-fat diet.
Additionally, supplementing with wheatgrass increased levels of the antioxidants glutathione and vitamin C .
Another test-tube study that evaluated the antioxidant activity of wheatgrass found it reduced oxidative damage to cells .
Given that the research on wheatgrass is limited to test-tube and animal studies, more studies are needed to determine how its antioxidants may affect humans.

SUMMARY

Wheatgrass is high in chlorophyll and many vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Test-tube and animal studies have found that its antioxidant content may prevent oxidative stress and cell damage.

2. May Reduce Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found throughout the body. While you need some cholesterol to make hormones and produce bile, too much cholesterol in your blood can block blood flow and increase your risk of heart disease.
Several animal studies have found that wheatgrass may help lower cholesterol levels.
In one study, rats with high cholesterol were given wheatgrass juice. They experienced decreased levels of total cholesterol, “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Interestingly, the effects of wheatgrass were similar to those of atorvastatin, a prescription drug commonly used to treat high blood cholesterol .
Another study looked at its effects in rabbits fed a high-fat diet. After 10 weeks, supplementing with wheatgrass helped lower total cholesterol and increase “good” HDL cholesterol, compared to a control group .
Despite these promising results, further studies are needed to determine how wheatgrass supplements may affect cholesterol levels in humans.
SUMMARY
Some animal studies have found that wheatgrass may help lower blood cholesterol levels, but human studies are needed.

3. Could Help Kill Cancer Cells

Thanks to its high antioxidant content, some test-tube studies have found that wheatgrass may help kill cancer cells.
According to one test-tube study, wheatgrass extract decreased the spread of mouth cancer cells by 41% .
In another test-tube study, wheatgrass induced cell death and reduced the number of leukemia cells by up to 65% within three days of treatment .
Some research indicates that wheatgrass juice may also help, when combined with traditional cancer treatment, minimize adverse effects.
One study found that wheatgrass juice decreased the risk of impaired bone marrow function, a common complication of chemotherapy, in 60 people with breast cancer.
However, there is still no evidence on the potential anti-cancer effects of wheatgrass in humans. More studies are needed to understand how it may impact cancer development in people.
SUMMARY
Test-tube studies show that wheatgrass may help kill cancer cells and reduce cancer development. Also, one human study found that it may reduce complications of chemotherapy.

4. May Aid in Blood Sugar Regulation

High blood sugar can cause a wide array of symptoms, including headaches, thirst, frequent urination and fatigue.
Over time, high blood sugar can have serious consequences like nerve damage, skin infections and vision problems.
Some animal studies have found that wheatgrass may help keep blood sugar levels under control.
In one study, giving wheatgrass to diabetic rats modified levels of certain enzymes that help lower blood sugar levels .
Another study found that treating diabetic rats with wheatgrass extract for 30 days resulted in significantly decreased blood sugar levels
Research on wheatgrass’ effects on blood sugar is limited to animals. More studies are needed to understand how it may affect blood sugar in humans.
SUMMARY
Some animal studies have found that wheatgrass may help decrease blood sugar levels, though more human studies are needed.

5. May Alleviate Inflammation

Inflammation is a normal response triggered by the immune system to protect the body against injury and infection.
However, chronic inflammation is believed to contribute to conditions like cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders .
Some research shows that wheatgrass and its components may help reduce inflammation.
One small study in 23 people looked at the effects of wheatgrass juice on ulcerative colitis, a disease characterized by inflammation in the large intestine.
Drinking just under 1/2 cup (100 ml) of wheatgrass juice for one month reduced disease severity and rectal bleeding in patients with ulcerative colitis .
Wheatgrass is also rich in chlorophyll, a plant pigment with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. One test-tube study showed that chlorophyll inhibited the activity of a specific protein that triggers inflammation .
Furthermore, another test-tube study found that the compounds in chlorophyll reduced inflammation in cells extracted from the arteries .
Most research is focused on certain compounds in wheatgrass or the effects of wheatgrass on a particular condition. More studies are needed to measure its potential anti-inflammatory effects on the general population.
SUMMARY
One study found that wheatgrass may help treat ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, test-tube studies have found that chlorophyll, a compound found in wheatgrass, may also decrease inflammation.

6. Could Help Promote Weight Loss

Many people have started adding wheatgrass juice to their diet as a quick and convenient way to boost weight loss.
Wheatgrass contains thylakoids, which are tiny compartments found in plants that contain chlorophyll and absorb sunlight for photosynthesis.
While there is no evidence that wheatgrass itself could increase weight loss, several studies have found that supplementing with thylakoids could enhance satiety and increase weight loss.
In one small study, supplementing a high-carb meal with thylakoids intensified feelings of satiety, compared to a placebo .
Similarly, a study in rats showed that supplementing with thylakoids increased satiety by slowing down the emptying of the stomach and increasing the release of hormones that decrease hunger .
Another study found that giving thylakoids to rats on a high-fat diet resulted in decreased food intake and body weight, compared to a control group .
However, keep in mind that thylakoids can also be found in many other food sources, including green vegetables and leafy greens like spinach, kale and lettuce.
What’s more, these studies used concentrations of thylakoids that were much greater than the concentrations typically found in wheatgrass.
There is also no research on the effects of wheatgrass on weight loss specifically. Further studies are needed to look at its effects on weight loss in humans.
SUMMARY
Human and animal studies have found that the thylakoids in wheatgrass and other green vegetables may increase satiety and weight loss.

7. Easy to Add to Your Diet

Wheatgrass is widely available in powder, juice and capsule form and can easily be found at health food shops and specialty grocery stores.
Furthermore, if you are able to grow wheatgrass at home, you can use a juicer to make your own wheatgrass juice.
Besides drinking wheatgrass juice, you can use the juice or powder to boost the nutritional content of your favorite green smoothies.
You can also mix wheatgrass juice into salad dressings, teas or other beverages.
SUMMARY
Wheatgrass is available as a juice, powder or supplement and can be consumed in a variety of ways. It’s quite easy to add to your diet.

Precautions and Side Effects

Wheatgrass is generally considered safe for those with celiac disease or a sensitivity to gluten. This is because only the seeds of the wheat kernel contain gluten — not the grass.
However, if you do have a sensitivity to gluten, it’s best to consult your doctor before consuming wheatgrass or stick to products that are certified gluten-free.
Wheatgrass is also very susceptible to mold if you’re growing it at home. If it has a bitter taste or shows signs of spoilage, err on the side of caution and discard it.
Finally, some people report symptoms like nausea, headaches or diarrhea after consuming wheatgrass in juice or supplement form. If you experience these or any other adverse effects, it’s best to decrease your intake.
If negative symptoms persist, consider talking to a healthcare practitioner or eliminating wheatgrass from your diet altogether.
SUMMARY
Wheatgrass is considered gluten-free, but special precautions should be taken if you have a gluten sensitivity. It’s also susceptible to mold growth and may cause negative symptoms in some people.

The Bottom Line

Wheatgrass and its components have been associated with many health benefits, including weight loss, decreased inflammation, lower cholesterol and better blood sugar control.
However, research on its effects in humans is lacking, and many studies are focused solely on its specific compounds.
Although more studies are needed to confirm the benefits of wheatgrass, drinking it as part of a well-balanced diet could help provide some extra nutrients and several health benefits.
